Congratulations are in order to Marsalis Music artist Doug Wamble, who recently learned that he had been awarded a New Works grant from Chamber Music America. The grant program, which supports the creation of new music by established ensembles with a history of performing original music featuring jazz improvisation, will allow Wamble to compose an extended piece for his working quartet plus horns that provides a sound portrait of the fictional world of William Faulkner.
In his winning proposal, Wamble explains that he wants to explore “the dichotomy of being an intellectual who is rooted in the down home elements of the South,” a combination that has made Wamble’s previous creations so singular. Wamble’s recent appearance at the Bonnaroo Music Festival in his native Tennessee was only the latest example of how his vocals, guitar, compositions and quartet performances cut across stylistic boundaries and unite listeners with divergent tastes. He will be working on the new piece over the summer, and we will update as plans for public performances, a requirement of the grant, develop. Doug Wamble can currently be heard on his Marsalis Music CDs Country Libations and Bluestate.
